American football quarterback Alexander Douglas Smith (born May 7, 1984) played in the NFL for 16 seasons. The University of Utah football team he was a part of won the 2005 Fiesta Bowl, and he was named to the All-American first team. His stellar performance for his college team led to him being taken first overall by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2005 NFL Draft.
Despite Smith’s inconsistency and injuries, the 2011 season was the 49ers’ most successful since 1997, when they won their division and advanced to the playoffs for the first time since 2002. However, the following year, Smith suffered a concussion that forced him out of the starting lineup and gave the job to the backup, Colin Kaepernick.
After that, the Kansas City Chiefs acquired him and he led them to four straight playoff appearances (2013–2017), their first division crowns in franchise history, and their first playoff triumph since 1993 (2015 season). Smith led the league in passer rating in 2017 and has been named to the Pro Bowl three times while with the Chiefs. He was essential in the development of Patrick Mahomes, the future NFL MVP, before he was dealt to the Washington Redskins in 2018.
