The World Swimming Championships of Budapest 2022 have experienced today a tremendous scare, which did not have serious consequences thanks to the quick intervention of the American Anita Alvarez‘s coach, the Spanish Andrea Fuentes. The athlete was in the pool, performing her solo artistic swimming exercise when she went to the bottom after fainting.
It happened just after finishing her routine when the music ended. Perhaps as a result of the tension, the swimmer fainted, with the aggravating circumstance of being in the water. Fuentes, Gemma Mengual’s historic partner, quickly jumped into the water to rescue his pupil. He was immediately joined by one of the competition assistants. Towed by both of them to the edge of the pool, the medical assistants evacuated the athlete.
After the ensuing commotion among those present, the competition resumed its course. The gold medal went to Japan’s Yukiko Inui (95.3667), silver to Ukraine’s Marta Fiedina (93.8000), and bronze to Greece’s Evangelia Platanioti (91.7667).
After the race, the U.S. team confirmed that Alvarez had recovered from her fainting spell. In fact, the swimmer returned with her team afterward to receive the hugs of her teammates and the applause of the public present in the training pool.
The cause of the athlete’s fainting is not yet known, although the hypothesis is a mixture of heat and stress.
