The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said that some beach umbrellas have spiked ends to help push them into the sand, and their wide canopies can get caught up in a strong wind if they aren’t properly anchored.

The federal agency thinks that beach umbrellas hurt about 3,000 people every year.

After an umbrella killed a Virginia woman in 2016, U.S. Sens. Tim Kaine and Mark Warner asked the safety agency to review beach umbrella safety rules and start a safety campaign.

The CPSC said that between 2008 and 2017, 31,000 people in the U.S. were hurt by umbrellas and had to go to the hospital. The injuries were different, but most hurt people were women over 40.

Most beach umbrellas have spiked ends and anchors made to go at least two feet deep into the sand (60 centimeters). The CPSC also says that beach umbrellas should be tilted against the wind so that the wide canopy doesn’t get lifted off the ground.
