Before going into details, below is the video of the whole incident:

According to details, a 35-year-old woman from Chicago, Carlishia Hood, and her son, who is 14 years old, have been charged with first-degree murder. This follows a deadly incident at a fast food restaurant in West Pullman where Hood allegedly instructed her son to shoot a 32-year-old man, Jeremy Brown, who had reportedly physically assaulted her.

Both Hood and her son face murder charges for the death of Brown, alleged to be an abuser. Additionally, Hood faces a felony charge for contributing to the delinquency of a minor. During a court hearing on Thursday, her bail was set at $3 million D-bond, meaning she is required to post 10% of the total to secure her release from custody. Her son, whose identity has not been disclosed, is due to be tried in juvenile court.

According to Assistant State’s Attorney Anne McCord Rodgers, Carlishia Hood and her 14-year-old son arrived at the Maxwell Street Express restaurant on South Halsted Street’s 11600 block for a late-night meal around 11 p.m. on Sunday.

Hood entered the restaurant, leaving her son in the car. Inside, she had a heated exchange with a man she didn’t previously know, Jeremy Brown. This verbal disagreement escalated drastically when Brown allegedly started to physically assault Hood, landing at least three forceful punches to her head, as stated by McCord Rodgers.

During the brutal attack on his mother, the 14-year-old boy entered the restaurant. He drew his mother’s handgun from the pocket of his hoodie and shot Brown in the back, aiming to cease the violent assault on his mother.

As Brown attempted to flee the scene, Hood reportedly commanded her son to fatally shoot him. The teenager pursued Brown, discharging more bullets to protect his defenseless mother, as detailed by McCord Rodgers.

Brown was hit twice and, unfortunately, succumbed to his injuries.

The whole episode was recorded on video, as stated by McCord Rodgers. Clips of this footage were made public by the Chicago Police Department earlier this week in a bid to help identify the culprits.

During a bail hearing, Cook County Judge Barbara Dawkins acknowledged that the charges suggest Brown had indeed hit Hood, but he was fatally shot while trying to flee the scene. Dawkins stated, “The threat at that point was over,” referring to Brown’s attempt to escape. She pointed out that despite circumstances possibly appearing different at trial, the actions taken at that moment did not constitute defense, but first-degree murder.

It’s indeed thought-provoking how the police often evade repercussions for shooting unarmed Black men in the back, who are frequently in the process of fleeing or trying to evade capture.

The video of the incident was captured by people present in the restaurant, and was shared on social media. You cam watch the Carlisha Hood and Son video on Twitter by going to this link of the video post.
