What is CSS

CSS stands for Central Superior Services. It is a exam that is conducted by Federal Public Service
Commission (FPSC) almost every year for the recruitment of high brain for bureaucracy in Pakistan.

It is for the posts of (BS-17) for the federal government. It is considered most toughest exam and requires high level of intellectual ability, plus hard work.

In this exams candidates are selected for following 12 groups of their choices.
1. Commerce and Trade Services
2. Customs and Exercise Services
3. District Management Group
4. Foreign Services of Pakistan
5. Income Tax Group
6. Information Group
7. Military Land and Cantonments Group
8. Office Management Group
9. Pakistan Audit and Accounts Services
10. Police Service of Pakistan
11. Postal services Group
12. Railway Group.

Who is Eligible for this Exam :

A Pakistani citizen who have minimum a bachelor degree and age between 21 to 30 years is eligible.
Must hold at least a Bachelor’s Degree with the second division in any Faculty/Discipline from one of the Pakistani Universities or an equivalent degree or comparable educational qualifications of a foreign University.
No candidate who has obtained a Third Division (or ‘D’ grade where result is declared under Semester System) in his Bachelor’s Degree will be eligible for the Examination except in cases where he/she has obtained a higher Division in Master’s Degree.
The age limit for admission in CSS Examination is 21-28 years, which is relaxable upto 2 years for those who are already in Government Service and have completed 2 years service. The relaxation is also available to candidates belonging to certain remote areas as defined by Government. Source of Info.

Nature of Exam:

This Exam is conducted in four phases.
1. Written Exam:
First step is written exam of 12 papers. Generally registration start in October and papers are
taken in next February .
A candidate require to pass all the papers and get above 50% marks for next step.

2. Medical Test:
After passing written candidates are called for their medical.

3. Psychological Test:
It is a test of personality , ability ,intelligence, interest and attitude.
Psychological test divided into two main categories : Ability test that measure intellectual and
reasoning ability of the candidates. Second is personality test that measure your confidence,
decision making skill, leadership ability etc.

4. Viva Voce and interview:
The knowledge is tested in written phase. The objective of interview is to access personality and
leadership skill. It is a type of oral test taken by a panel of members who judge your ability to
communicate with people.

Finally after these four steps required number of candidates are selected in 12 different group
for the management of bureaucracy.


How should I select the subjects?

For subject selection, keep in mind the following points:
Try to have the subjects that you have studied before.
Don’t ever go for “that easy subject”, try to find out its scoring value.
Previous statistics show that subjects with 100 marks give more score than subjects with 200 marks.
Science subjects are more scoring than their arts counterparts.
People even have scored 2 marks in some subjects like Constitutional Law because they thought it was too easy.
Languages are usually high scoring subjects.
Indo-Pak History does not usually result in a high score–avoiding it as generally helpful.
However, other history subjects have better scoring averages.

Would my subject combination affect my choice of any occupational group?

No, your subject combination does not affect your choice for any specific occupational group. You can choose any subjects and be considered for any group according to your marks and merit.

How many attempts can I make?

You can make not more than three (03) attempts for the CSS exam.

How many subjects do I need to choose?


Subjects carrying 600 marks are compulsory while you have to choose subjects carrying 600 marks among optional subjects.

What is the fee for the exam?

The current fee is Rs. 2200/.
