The hours-long rampage caused buses and trolleys to stop running and shortened a minor league baseball game. It happened less than a week after a well-known kidnapping and murder of a school teacher who was out jogging. The violence made the city’s mayor very angry.
During the man’s hours-long rampage, police told everyone in the city to stay put, locked down a baseball stadium and university campuses, and stopped running public buses as scared people wondered where the man would strike next.
Memphis Police Director Carolyn “CJ,” Davis said that there were seven shootings and at least two carjackings before Ezekiel Kelly was arrested without a problem at about 9 p.m. We lost four lives and had three injured.

Kelly got out of prison in March after serving 11 months of a three-year sentence for aggravated assault. Court records show that he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge after being charged with attempted murder, reckless endangerment, and using a gun to commit a dangerous felony in a 2020 case in Shelby County.
