On Monday, Payton informed Saints general manager Mickey Loomis and team owner Gayle Benson of his decision after extensive discussions over the previous week and a brief break to consider his future. According to the source, it is not known whether Payton will leave the team permanently. The organization is planning to move forward and could name defensive coordinator Dennis Allen as Saints head coach as soon as this week.

According to Tuesday morning, the source stated that it is premature to assume Payton is leaving the franchise permanently or to speculate on him possibly landing a head coaching job elsewhere. Payton, 58, has been with the saints since 2006, is currently under contract through 2024 and the Saints would be entitled to trade compensation if any team considered pursuing him prior to the expiration of that contract.
