We all want a good phone in value for money, and Xiaomi is one of the companies that comes to mind before when we think about this. But the chaos in the catalog and the increase in the price on it has paved the way for Samsung. A giant that rises again to the first position in units sold in Spain, according to Canalys data.

Samsung overtakes Xiaomi from the left

2021 closed with Xiaomi on the podium of shipments, although showing a drop in year-on-year growth. Data from the first quarter of 2022 show a Samsung regaining leadership, growing year-on-year by 8%, surpassing Xiaomi and reaching 73.7 million units sold.

Xiaomi goes to the second position, with a 29% representation in terms of units sold and with a year-on-year drop of 26%. The figure is exactly the same as that of Q4 2021 (29%), with the big difference that Samsung has overtaken them on the right, with 33%. Apple remains in second place, growing compared to the 11% unit share it had last year. At the start of 2022 it rises to 15%, consolidating third place.

OPPO and Realme, which have managed to make Huawei disappear from the Spanish map, are day and night, with an incessant Realme that consolidates fifth position growing by 223% and OPPO in fourth place, although falling by 37% year-on-year.

Samsung is shining in value for money silently

Samsung’s best-selling phones in Spain.

Samsung phones, especially in the middle segment, usually have a high RRP. What happens just a few weeks and months later? That the price is starting to plummet. If we look at Amazon’s best-selling Samsung phones, we see that the average is around 200 euros. The price at which Xiaomi has led for a few years.

Xiaomi’s own search for best-selling phones on Amazon gives us a similar average price, of about 200 euros per terminal, 300 euros in the case of the most ambitious. In Spain, Samsung begins to compete in value for money with Xiaomi, frequently standing out on screen and camera against its direct rival.

If you are looking for “Xiaomi” on Amazon, the first thing that appears are Samsung phones.

Added to this are factors such as Samsung’s simplest catalog, restrictions on shipments from China to Europe, which fall by 5% year-on-year, as well as an aggressive strategy on the part of Samsung in advertising. In fact, curiously, if we look for “Xiaomi” on Amazon, the first thing that appears to us are some of Samsung’s best sellers.

It remains to be seen if Samsung is able to keep up the pace throughout the course. The start has been spectacular, but the fight for first place is still alive.
