Pakistan-Afghanistan border crossing closed after reported rocket attack

Several Rockets were hit at Pakistan-Afghanistan Border, fired from Afghan Side, foreign office of Pakistan reported on Wednesday, janaury 29, 2019. The Torkham border crossing, one of the principle land connections between Afghanistan and Pakistan, has been closed for all traffic. It comes after a reported rocket attack from the Afghan side.

The road passing by Torkham leads to the Afghanistan’s capital city, Kabul through Jalalabad. On the Pakistani side, the border crossing is connected to the capital city, Islamabad through Peshawar, Capital City of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

Torkham border was temporarily shut down by the Pakistani authorities on Wednesday, with officials citing security concerns (Following Rocket attack), according to media reports. The closure was said to be prompted by a rocket attack at the checkpoint, which left two Pakistani soldiers injured according to Rt.com.

Local Afghan officials cited by media say talks are underway to reopen the crossing.

Since September 2019, the Torkham crossing, which is used by thousands of people daily, has operated around the clock. Previously, it was opened only for 12 hours a day.

Earlier on Monday, Afghan President, Ashraf Ghani has condemned the arrest of PTM leader, Manzoor Pashteen by Pakistan’s security agencies. Pashteen was accused of anti-state activities and provoking Pakhtun people against Pakistan and Pakistan Army.

The statement of Afghan President sparked anger inside Pakistan and Pakistan’s foreign office advised Ashraf Ghani not to interfere in internal matters of Pakistan.
