The years-long Joe Mixon saga is back in the news, months after the Oklahoma Supreme Court ruled that “the video recording of University of Oklahoma football player Joe Mixon punching a woman in a Norman restaurant must be released for public viewing.”
Mixon is now an NFL draft pick, going in the second round to Cincinnati. He’s one of the year’s top running back prospects.
Mixon was arrested and charged for punching a woman in the face at a cafe, breaking four bones in her face, in July 2014, before his freshman season with the Sooners began. He entered an Alford plea, maintaining his innocence but recognizing the evidence against him, and received a deferred sentence. He was also suspended for his entire freshman season, but he was allowed to remain in school.

Mixon punches a woman in the face. The woman alleges that he severely injured her face. She speaks to NewsOK the day after the incident:
Molitor said she had never seen Mixon before he punched her in the face, breaking four bones. She said Mixon was “harassing” her and some of her friends at Pickleman’s before the incident.
“He punched me one time,” she said. “He broke my face in four places … my nose, my sinuses … they’re broken.”
Molitor, who spoke confidently over the protests of her mother, said she plans to take legal action against Mixon, and added that she fears the wrath of OU fans.
“That’s my big fear (the fans),” Molitor said. “I’ve been told to stay off of social media to avoid (OU fans) coming after me on there.”
Mixon’s attorney says Mixon is “definitely looking forward to the truth coming out.”

Police have begun investigating, but do not yet press charges. The police report states the following:
The facts of the incident as reported to police describe an altercation between Amelia Rae Molitor, age 20 of Norman, and Joe Mixon that turned physical and concluded with Molitor sustaining injuries to her face.
While there is a video of the incident, police choose not to release it.

Mixon is suspended for the entire 2014 season by Oklahoma. He is able to take classes and keep his financial aid, but not take part in any team activities.

Norman police still don’t release the video, but they do stage a viewing of it. NewsOK writes that it looks like the victim, who is not charged, pushes and slaps Mixon. Then he punches her and knocks her to the ground:
After a brief discussion, Mixon looks as if he’s going to walk away, but looks like he says something as he turns. Molitor then pushes Mixon, setting off a quick series of events that were over in three seconds. Mixon reacts to the push by lunging at Molitor with a closed fist at his side. She reacts by slapping Mixon near where his jaw and neck meet on his left side.
Then the punch.
Mixon lands a devastating right hook that knocks Molitor off her feet. First she hits the table on her left ear, then falls to the ground, where she lays still.

Mixon reaches an Alford plea deal, which means he is allowed to maintain his innocence while also admitting that the prosecution has enough evidence to convict. He receives a one-year deferred sentence, 100 hours of community service and mandated behavioral counseling.

The judge rules that since there is no arrest shown in the video, it does not have to be released under open records laws. The city has been sued by a number of media organizations for not complying with their open records requests.

Mixon plays the entire 2015 season for Oklahoma after his reinstatement, but he never meets with the media. However, due to Orange Bowl rules, he is made available to the media leading up to the Sooners’ College Football Playoff matchup against Clemson.
Mixon refuses to answer any questions about the incident, at the advice of his legal counsel.

The Oklahoma Court of Civil Appeals rules that the district court’s reasoning in deciding not to release the video is incorrect. Now, according to NewsOK, the district court has to determine whether the video can be released on the grounds that the “public’s interest in the surveillance video outweighs the reason for denying access to it.”
There is still no decision regarding whether the video will ultimately be released.

The Oklahoma Supreme Court has ruled that the video recording of University of Oklahoma football player Joe Mixon punching a woman in a Norman restaurant must be released for public viewing.
The state’s highest court issued the ruling Tuesday in a case brought by the Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters against the city of Norman, the Norman Police Department and the Cleveland County District Attorney.
It’s unclear, however, if the video will be immediately released. One Norman city official said an appeal for a re-hearing of the ruling remains possible, which could delay release of the video until at least January 2017.

NFL.com reports that Mixon is completely off of “no lower than six” teams’ draft boards.
“Off the board. Our guys went and talked to him. They said he was really good. Doesn’t drink, doesn’t smoke. Just made a mistake when he was 18 and is paying for it,” an NFC executive said.
“He will not be on my board. Impulsive violence against a defenseless woman. I believe in forgiveness, but this is not a matter of forgiveness. It’s natural consequences for an action. I wish him well,” added an AFC executive.
Some NFL executives have mixed feelings.
“I really think without the incident he’s a top-five pick,” one NFC executive told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel’s Bob McGinn. “He’s probably going to go late first to mid-second. This guy’s just too talented.”
“I did a lot of (expletive) when I was 18 that I’m not proud of, but I never knocked out a girl,” an AFC executive said. “That’s just such a hot-button issue. I’m hearing too many things. Where there’s smoke, there’s fire.”

As of Monday before the draft, Mixon was reportedly still on the Philadelphia Eagles‘ draft board, likely along with others, according to NJ.com.
Not only do the Eagles still have Mixon — who was video taped punching a woman in 2014 — on their board, but they are very interested in him, have been doing extensive research into him off-the-field and would be willing to draft him.
Eagles vice president of player personnel Joe Douglas also spoke very highly of Mixon last week.
“A lot of people think that he is one of the top backs in this draft,” Douglas said. “So if you take character out of the equation, physically he is a very good player. But most teams aren’t doing that.”
