Atkins was born in 1948. She’s German, English, Irish, and Scottish. Northern California was her home. Atkins says he and Jeanne Jett were alcoholics. Cancer killed her mother in 1964. Susan’s family divorced, she moved numerous times, and she left home to live alone for over three years. Atkins grew up in Cambrian Park, San Jose. She was a shy, self-conscious glee club and church choir member. Two weeks before her mother died, Susan had the church choir sing carols under her window. Relatives helped Susan and her brothers after Jeanne Atkins’ death.
Edward Atkins relocated to California with Susan and Steven. Edward abandoned his kids to build the San Luis Dam. Susan supported herself and Steven in college. Atkins’ grades slipped at Los Banos after attending San Jose’s Leigh High School. She lived with relatives.
During Christmas break in 1966, Atkins invited two students to San Francisco. She left Los Banos for San Francisco alone and didn’t finish school.
