Why parents are suing Fortnite over their kids’ game addiction

Parents are suing Fortnite – Fortnite is one of the most popular free-to-play Battle Royale games, but could some of its popularity be because young people are addicted to it? Some parents think so, for sure. They have formed a group suit against the company and are suing it.

Some parents say that Epic Games made the game to make it addicting. The suit also says that Epic didn’t warn players enough about the risks of addiction, which they say are common.

Parents are suing Fortnite – Usually, a case like this could be complicated. Even though that is true, they did solve one legal problem: a judge is willing to let the case go forward instead of throwing it out.

Parents started the lawsuit from Canada.

6ABC says that one mom, Deanna Greenstein, thinks her kids, who are 12 and 13, were hooked almost right away:

“It takes up so much of their time that they don’t want to play basketball outside when they get home from school. They didn’t want to go meet up with their friends in person. It made them mad, which I didn’t like. I’d say it’s very hard to stop doing.”
The World Health Organization, or WHO, says that she is addicted to video games, which is true. A neuroscientist from the United States named Dr. Andrew Newberg said:

"They go through withdrawal, just like when they use drugs or drink too much. Symptoms: When they can't play games, they might feel sad, angry, or irritable."

David Glass, a lawyer, and former psychologist says that the parents don’t have much hope, though:

"The people who filed it must show the court why it shouldn't follow the DSM. It's not likely at this point. No U.S. courts have decided to go with WHO instead of the DSM."
Epic Games says: "We don't think this lawsuit has any legs."
"We have the best parental controls in the industry, so parents can keep an eye on what their kids do online."

The company that makes and sells video games also said that it would fight these claims in court because it doesn’t think they are true.

Has anyone ever sued Epic Games or Fortnite?

This is not the first time Epic Games or Fortnite has been sued. They went to war with Apple, in particular, over the iOS version of the game.

In the lawsuit, Apple and Epic Games fought over how V-bucks could be used to buy things inside the app. This is why Apple took the game off the App Store afterward.

In the end, the judge sided with Apple on all but one of the counts, giving Fortnite a big loss. But there is a chance that the game will return to Apple devices at some point in the future.

Also, they’ve been in court for things like suing cheaters and other things. Even though Fortnite has only been popular for about five years, it has been to court a few times.

Even though the lawsuit isn’t likely to hurt Fortnite or its creators legally, it is the latest in what could be a long line of lawsuits.’
