The husband of the speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to misdemeanor drunk driving charges related to a crash in May in California’s wine country. He was given five days in jail and three years of probation.
Judge Joseph Solga of the Napa County Superior Court said that Paul Pelosi has already spent two days in jail. He has been given credit for two more days because he was good. Solga said at Paul Pelosi’s sentencing, which he did not attend that Paul Pelosi would work eight hours in the court’s work program to make up for the remaining day.
State law says that people accused of DUI misdemeanors can show up through their lawyer unless the court says otherwise.
As part of his probation, Paul Pelosi will also have to take a three-month class on how to drive sober and install a device that requires the driver to blow into a tube before the car starts. The judge also said that he would have to pay fines of almost $7,000.
After a crash on May 28 in Napa County, north of San Francisco, Paul Pelosi was arrested for DUI. A test showed his blood alcohol level was 0.82%, just over the legal limit.
The complaint says that when police arrived at the crash around 10 p.m. near the town of Yountville in wine country, they found Pelosi driving a 2021 Porsche Carrera and the other driver standing outside of an SUV.

Following his detention, Pelosi posted bail for $5,000 and was allowed to go free. Speaker Pelosi was in Rhode Island to give the commencement address at Brown University. Her staff has remained silent.
